Building Australia's Innovation Ecosystem
Data is the new currency of our world. Data-driven insights change the way we live, work, invent and innovate. Data is the raw material that fuels new industries and disrupts existing ones.
Digital disruption re-writes businesses models. It empowers and destroys. It allows small resource-constrained organisations to win in areas that large enterprises cannot compete in. It's an unstoppable transformation that profoundly affects companies, governments and societies around the world. Some jobs will disappear, new jobs will be created. Some of today's markets will evaporate, new ones will emerge. Fortunes will be won and lost.
Digital disruption affects everyone. These changes are playing out across industry, government and society. We’re shifting to a new economic structure, an evidence-based world, where data underpins our decision making. In the future, data-driven insights will guide the way we live, work, learn and innovate.
Data61 is Australia’s leading digital research network, we’re helping create a data-driven future. The Data61 strategic insight toolkit contains scenario planning, horizon scanning, technology road-mapping, megatrends analysis, risk analysis, decision theory, strategic planning, statistical forecasting and systems modelling
Core to the Data61 operating model is breaking down sector boundaries to draw on the best talent wherever it may exist. 415 of our 1100 staff are PhD students and many of our staff have previously built their own businesses. Our predecessor organisation (NICTA) generated several spinouts, and we are now working closely with several start-ups/SMEs to provide them access to world leading technology.
We currently work with 29 Australian universities and have close links to other world-leading international universities such as Harvard. We are proud of our rich, multi-dimensional relationships which add to our technical capability and knowledge base.
In addition to our 29 university partners, we have more than 90 corporate and 30 government partners with whom we share insights and learnings. We’re working on more than 190 data-driven projects and own 170+ patents, all testament to our ability to leverage science and research to deliver innovative outcomes.
At Data61, we are also taking a leading role in building Australia’s innovation ecosystem through the creation of the D61+, a network that will connect start-ups, SME, multi-nationals, the research sector and government.
Participating organisations will be offered access to our technical and domain expertise and capability around data capture, analysis and use. This includes data science, data engineering and user experience (UX) design. When organisations work alongside us they are supported by a real sleeves-rolled-up partner. We are not a cheer squad nor a consultant. We are innovators and inventors and we work alongside our partners.
